A 9-man member Technical Committee for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) team of the month selection has been inaugurated.
The Committee was inaugurated on Thursday, August 17, 2023, as part of the NPFL’s plan to inject fresh ideas into the country’s football league, and also to make it a cynosure for soccer lovers.
The head of the Technical Committee is former Super Eagles player, Daniel Amokachi.
Other members of the Technical Committee include Austin Eguavoen, Harrison Jalla, Segun Agbede, Davidson Owunmi, Godwin Uwa, Deji Omotoyinbo, and famous sports journalist, Mitchel Obi.
Addressing a media interactive session at the Assets Management and Trust Limited (GTI) Headquarters in Lagos, NPFL Chairman, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye revealed that the committee’s responsibility includes selecting the best players in the league that will form part of the proposed end of the season team.
In his words: “The idea of having a Technical Committee for team of the month selection may not be entirely new but that the board is putting the added flavour and benefits of going to having an end-of-season team and an All-Star squad that will spend two weeks in Spain playing friendly games with top LaLiga sides.
“Right now, we have secured an agreement with a top LaLiga club to host our NPFL selected team and arrange for them to play against some other top teams in Spain.
“This, no doubt, will be an enriching experience for the players as they will have the opportunity to train and play against some of the very best teams in LaLiga. It also has the added edge of going to form the nucleus of a future CHAN Eagles team”.
Elegbeleye, who noted that the NPL board is not in doubt as to the capacity of the committee members to deliver on the assignment before it, pointed out that, “The modalities for your function will be discussed offline to define the finer details.
“We undertook a thorough process of selecting members of this panel to cut across players, coaches, and the media. We picked persons with the right pedigree and there is no doubt that they will give us the right squad each month”.
Amokachi, in his acceptance speech, expressed the determination of the Technical Committee to do a thorough job and will not allow sentiment to override their judgment.
All things being equal, the league is scheduled to kick off September 9, 2023, across the country.
