Lobi Stars maintained their grip on the top spot in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Rivers United on Matchday 25.
The Makurdi-based team secured the win with goals from Tiza Iorwuese, Also Dabani, and Kumaga Suur, while Ukeme Williams and Mark Gibson netted for Rivers United in a closely contested encounter.
In other fixtures, Plateau United emerged as the biggest winners with a dominant 4-0 triumph over Gombe United. Silas Nenrot’s hat-trick and Alexander Enejo’s goal sealed the impressive victory for the Jos-based side.
Akwa United secured a crucial 3-1 win against Bendel Insurance, with Friday Ubong bagging a brace and Sani Suleiman also finding the net. Zaidu Ayuba scored the lone goal for Bendel Insurance.
Enugu Rangers battled to a 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars, with Collins Ugwueze equalizing Mubarak Sani’s opener for the away side.
Kwara United secured a vital 1-0 victory over Bayelsa United, courtesy of Mohamed Alao’s decisive goal.
Meanwhile, Olamilekan Adams’ solitary goal propelled Remo Stars to a 1-0 win over defending champions Enyimba FC in Ikenne.
Niger Tornadoes edged Sporting Lagos 1-0, thanks to Akintunde Azeez’s early strike, while Sunshine Stars secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Katsina United, with Ibrahim Yusuf scoring the decisive goal.
At the bottom of the table, Heartland secured their first win under coach Obi with a 2-0 victory against Abia Warriors, thanks to goals from Onyekachi Okafor and Ikechukwu Mgbemena.
Despite the win, Heartland remains at the bottom of the log, while Lobi Stars lead the table with 46 points, followed closely by Plateau United with 44 points. Enugu Rangers, Remo Stars, and Enyimba FC are all tied on 42 points, with Remo Stars having a game in hand against Rivers United.
Gombe United, Bayelsa United, and Akwa United occupy the relegation zone, with Heartland continuing to apply pressure from the bottom.
