Lobi Stars suffered their first defeat of the 2023/24 Nigeria Professional Football League season, after losing 1-0 to Rivers United on Sunday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Alex Oyowah scored the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute to seal maximum points for the Pride of Rivers in a cagey encounter with very few chances created between the two teams.
At the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, Shooting Stars Sports Club came from a goal down to defeat Doma United 3-1.
A fantastic free kick from Nelson Abiam in just nine minutes of the match gave the visitors the lead before Gbolagade Adelowo equalised for 3SC from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime to pull them level 1-1.
Shortly into the second half, Ademola Ayinde put the Oluyole Warriors in front with an impressive run and finish. Gideon Monday’s 93rd minute strike secured a 3-1 victory for the home side.
The win sends Shooting Stars joint top of the league table with 10 points after five matches.
Sunshine Stars lost 3-2 to Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, after taking the lead on two occasions.
Michael Olulasi gave the visitors a surprise lead in the 18th minute of the match before Michael Ibe restored parity for the home side on the 45th minute.
Michael Olulasi completed his brace on the 45+2 minutes from the penalty spot to give Sunshine Stars a 2-1 lead at halftime.
However, a double strike from Bello Lukman in the 49th and 62nd minute gave Katsina United a narrow victory.
At the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Robert Christian Mizo was the hero for Bayelsa United after they secured a 2-1 victory over Kwara United.
Mizo scored the game’s opening goal in the 11th minute for Bayelsa United before Samuel Ayanrinde got the equaliser for the visitors in the 19th minute.
Mizo however, got the winning goal in the 33rd minute, his fifth goal of the season, to secure all three points for the Restoration boys.
At the Umuahia Township stadium, newly-promoted Heartland FC remain without a win this season after the Naze Millionaires suffered a 1-0 defeat against Abia Warriors.
At the Onikan Stadium in Lagos, Sporting Lagos defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-1 to continue their impressive start to the season.
Sporting dominated proceedings and were later rewarded with two clinical goals in the first half through Jonathan Alukwu in the 27th minute and Junior Lokosa just before the half time whistle.
Midway through the second half, Tornadoes got a life line when Usman Bashir was left unmarked and picked out Yahuza Bala with a decent pass and the striker made no mistake in striking home to reduce the deficit in the 67th minute, as the game ended 1-1 in favour of the home side.
