The Ogun state-born shot-stopper was unveiled on Monday at the club’s Secretariat in Umuahia by the Chairman of Abia Warriors, Coach John Obuh in a brief but impressive ceremony witnessed by members of management.
Former Super Eagles goaltender, Ike Shorunmu has joined the technical crew of Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia as the new goalkeeper’s coach.
The Ogun state-born shot-stopper was unveiled on Monday at the club’s Secretariat in Umuahia by the Chairman of Abia Warriors, Coach John Obuh in a brief but impressive ceremony witnessed by members of management.
Speaking, the club administrator, Coach John Obuh said he decided to go for Shorunmu because of his vast experience and antecedents hoping that his addition will be a big influence.
On his own, Shorunmu said he settled for Abia Warriors based on personal conviction and expressed confidence that the team will achieve greater success this season.
Ike Shorunmu used to be one of the biggest players in the Nigeria local football scene having cut his teeth with Super Stores of Lagos, the goaltender was also a cult hero with Shooting Stars of Ibadan before leaving the shores of the country for greener pastures.
He represented Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup before he quit active football, for coaching, a journey which later saw him join the Super Eagles backroom staff as a goalkeeper trainer and worked with Jose Peseiro-led technical crew of recent. which later in goal for Nigeria.
Ike Shorunmu will now work with the Abia Warriors technical team led by coach Erasmus Onu in the coming season which is due to start on September 9, 2023.
