Akwa United eased their relegation worries with an emphatic 3-1 win over visiting Enyimba International in a matchday 23 Nigeria Premier Football League NPFL tie today.
The omens spelt doom for the visitors as David Phillip tapped home from close range to put Akwa 1nil up as early as the 6th minute.
On 50 minutes, Suleiman Sani ran into a good pass, rounded Enyimba’s keeper Olorunleke Ojo before slotting into an empty net for Akwa’s second goal.
Enyimba halved the deficit in the 72nd minute when the league’s joint top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma dispatched a penalty to take his tally in the season to 11 goals
As the Aba based team surged forward for the equaliser, Sani wreaked havoc at the opposite end as he took his time in added minutes to beat his marker before curling in a delicious ball into the back of the net.
The win takes Akwa to 17th in the table with 24 points while Enyimba dropped to 5th on 36 points, 3 ahead of 6th placed Kano Pillars who shockingly lost at home 0-1 to Abia Warriors.
Defender Daniel Ijeh scored the only goal in the 72nd minute to lift Warriors three places to 8th in the standings.
At the Pantami Stadium, Doma United continued their winless run over 5 games with a 0-0 scoreline against visiting Sporting Lagos who lost Mike Zaruma in the 79th minute for red card offense.
The draw took Sporting two places to 12th on the log with 28 points while Doma occupy 9th place.
Round 24 NPFL action is billed for this weekend with Bendel Insurance opening proceedings against Gombe United on 8 March 2024.
