Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, left it late to secure a dramatic 2-1 win over Gombe United, with Malomo Taofeek emerging the hero of the day.
The Shooting Stars’ captain scored a second half brace, with the second coming in the dying minutes, to cancel out the Savannah Scorpions’ early lead.
The Ibadan soccer lords started the encounter on a bright note, firing from all cylinders in search of the opener but were undone by poor marksmanship.
While the heat on the visitors continued, the Savannah Scorpions, surprisingly shot into the lead, with their first major attempt on goal, through Aliko Bala.
The goal further brought out the best in the homers but Ayobami Adekunle, Oke Kayode, Joshua Akpan as well as Malomo Taofeek, and Ayobami Junior, all had their attempts either saved by goalkeeper Itodo Akor or missing the target, thus ending the first half 1-0 in the visitors’ favour.
The Oluyole Warriors came into the second half with renewed vigour, pushing forward for the leveller.
Coach Gbenga Ogunbote introduced the trio of Muritala Taye, Douglass Archiv and Kareem Ayinde and the substitutions helped in increasing the pressure on the visitors
The homers got a well deserved equaliser nine minutes into the second half though Malomo’s brilliant effort, after the 3SC skipper was located by Kareem Ayinde.
When Gombe United thought they had survived the Shooting Stars’ onslaught, Malomo struck again in the 89th minutes, scoring the winner, off an assist by Douglass Archiv, to send the stadium into wild jubilation.
Gombe United created some scary moments in the 3SC dangerous area towards the end of the five minutes added time but the 3SC defense stood their ground, while goalkeeper Ovunda Darlintin was at his best to make timely saves, to ensure coach Muhammed Babaganaru tutored Gombe United return home empty handed.
Up next for the Oluyole Warriors, is a trip to Uyo for a tricky Matchday four fixture against Akwa United next Sunday.
