It was a goal from Shola Abdulraheem that gave Kwara United a desperately needed win over Remo Stars in the Nigeria Professional Football League. It was also a first win former Nigeria Emmanuel Amunike with Heartland.
It was a lovely solo run completed in the 56th minute of the match played in Ilorin.
Remo Stars fought to level the score but it got worse for them as they had to play the rest of the match with a man down after Faisal got his second yellow card in the 72nd minute.
Remo Stars coach, Daniel Ogunmodede said it would always be a tough outing for any team facing “a wounded lion.”
“We know we’re coming to play a wounded lion in Kwara United team today after they had played four games without a win. I congratulate them.”
Kwara United will play their next game away to Abia Warrior on Sunday.
Just as it was in Ilorin, it was a good day for Heartland in Owerri as Niger Tornadoes fell at the Dan Anyiam Stadium courtesy of Michael Ogu’s brace.
Ogu opened the scoring with a stunning header in the 20th minute to put the hosts in the lead and then sealed victory in the 61st minute. The second goal was a low shot inside the box, beating the Tornadoes’ defense.
Tornadoes bench effected some changes towards the end of the game, all in a bid to salvage something but failed to yield fruit.
Mohammed Hussaini came close to reducing the tally when his free kick crashed the woodwork.
