Akwa United’s survival battle took a very positive turn on Sunday after they secured a 2-0 victory over hosts Kwara United in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game played in Ilorin, Extrasportsnigeria.wordpress.com reports.
Across the country to Owerri, Abia Warriors moved in similar fashion as Akwa in their fixture against Heartland winning 1-0 with a 10-man team.
Kwara United created a lot of scoring chances in the first half, were wasteful in the box.
The situation got worse for Kwara when Segun Adekunle received a straight red card for impeding a goal-bound attack, reducing the team to 10 men.
Akwa United capitalized on the numerical advantage, breaking the deadlock through Kabir Osoba, who reacted quickest to a rebound from free kick. Uche Sabastine was the other scorer. It becomes Akwa United first back-to-back victory this season and extended their unbeaten run to four games.
In Owerri the Warriors’ Emmanuel Ogbuagu’s got a red card in the 57th minute, but his teammate Adejoh Ojonugwa scored with ten minutes left via a free kick to give the top-four runners the win.
Enyimba and Bayelsa United played 1-1 while Rivers United got the three maximum points against Ikorodu City with a 1-0 win.
Kwara United’s Coach Sanni expressed his disappointment over the first half misses.
He said, “We ought to have won convincingly with our performance in the first 20 minutes, but my lads wasted scoring chances, and we paid the price.”
